I bought a sword in japan. Not a nihonto. Was a samurai and ninja style. Before asking for a ninja style be aware some shops might kick you out as ninja is a taboo subject over their and classed as an assasins weapon. I found my ninja sword in Osaka. I had a japanese friend take me to japan post. Dont try anywhere elsem i also got letters for both swords from the shops i got them from saying exactly what they where.
I got 2 of each and stuck one in a con-not clear en olipe on the side for when it landed in australia. And i also got my friend to to a english one. Didnt have any dramas but customs called me qhen i got home and had lots of questions. Luckily i have a collectors knife license so it was easy for me but i believe anyone ahould be okay.
My ninja sword was technically against my license because the tip was doible sided. But the customs officer was nice and pretended he didnt see it as i had done everything i could to make it easy for them.
Even concerting everything into english etc. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity. We hope you'll join the conversation by posting to an open topic or starting a new one.

Anyway, from the sounds of this, it looks like its ok to ship blades that are sword length. I have been "caught" when I bought a knife over the net and deemed "warned". It was understandable I guess and that was my first time without knowledge about the laws. So I would like a big confirmation about this matter.
Would there be any registration required when shipping to Australia? Besides Victoria Another note, can they be shipped already "sharpened"? Our shipping length rule sucks but for a standard katana you should have issues, as long as you are 18 or over and the blade isn't concealable. Dont try buying in daggers as they are illegal and can mean serious jail time. Baby steel has nightmares of growing up to be made into a cheness blade You are entitled to your opinion with the provision that it isn't inaccurate or plain dumb "Technical knowledge alone is not enough.
A martial artist must simultaneously transcend technique and develop intuitive action so that the art becomes an artless art, a way to physical excellence, a way to spiritual enlightenment" - Joe Hyams: Zen in the Martial arts.
I see, all is good as long as its not a concealable weapon even though its diamond sharp?. How would they check if you are over 18 or not? I am over 18 so Im not worried about that, but would I need to tell them Im going to receive such a sword? Yeah, Im scared getting in trouble.. Hold the phone. Just my exemption? Holy crap, if this is the case I swear I have lost so much money from buying from global gear. Edit: What about things such as Yari?
Yari would be classed as spears I guess? Therefore its not a short or concealed weapon and should be no problems with customs act, dont know about Vic state though. Best bet is to check with Customs. I may be able to help out with shipping if you need it - ask Vue for feedback on that.

They are illegal. No hassles, at all. However, I would encourage you to go to a local seller - less chance of rust and your money goes towards a local business Rass , Jan 10, I'll let you know how it goes..
I would go to the local place and buy a sword.. Joined: Aug 19, Messages: 1, Location: Melbourne. The legal restrictions of owning a sword or other similar weapon will depend on what state you live in.
Coca-bear, since you haven't said which state you're in, there's no easy answer for you specifically. The web site of your state government should have it's weapon control laws online, so that's the first thing to check. If you want to have a type of sword imported that requires a permit, get the permit first, then order the sword. If customs give you any hassles about it when the sword arrives, you'll have a valid permit for it that you can show them when you pick it up.
GarethB , Jan 11, Well i wrote an email to the Customs and they replied with some good information.. Coca-Bear , Jan 13, Well if i get written permission from the Minister of Justice and Customs, and also the Minister of Police as stated in the Law I dont really see what could go wrong only if they find something seriously wrong for them to confidscate the items, aslong as i give prior knowledge to the customs to an sword will be shipped in.
